Since 1910, Teatru Salesjan has been Sliema's social magnet; home to philanthropic events and theatrical societies for over a century. But as theatrical infrastructure moved on, the building didn't: the venue was slowly losing productions to better-equipped stages, at risk of the fate that's overtaken so many of Malta's community theatres.

We were asked to bring it up to date while preserving its soul. Theatrical lighting, fire safety, HVAC and AV systems are folded discreetly into a reworked balcony, so the significant heritage fabric stays largely untouched. Original finishes are kept, with every addition earning its place to serve function, and easily reversed in future to allow for changes in infrastructure. Even through Covid, when works stopped and the city went quiet, the theatre's own crew kept it alive: streaming performances from the building site itself, a reminder that Teatru Salesjan hadn't gone anywhere. Conservation, reuse and flexibility all serve the same end: a theatre the community keeps coming back to.
