It started in our own home, with a need for shelving to hold books, drinks and music in one living space, without settling for an ordinary fitted unit. The result sits somewhere between furniture and sculpture, and it is very much a product: still designed, produced and installed on bespoke assignments today.

The design pairs two touchstones of early modernism. Mondrian's Composition with Yellow, Blue and Red gives it the grid of colour blocks: red and blue panels set irregularly through a black frame. Rietveld's Red Blue Chair, built two decades earlier, lends its structural logic. Its bars, in solid tulipwood, run past their joints and stop short with a flash of yellow, the same detail that marks where the chair's frame locks together. Shelves and storage, slot into that frame without any glue, which keeps the whole structure easy to take apart, flat-pack and move.

In its original colourway, every shelf is hand-painted, down to the last detail, an insistence on craft in a piece that could easily have been mass-produced instead. The design has since been remade in other finishes too, oak and marble among them, the grid holding steady while the material and its treatment change underneath it.
