The frame of a cube, rather than the solid itself, its corners detailed with the precision of a piece of furniture.

A visit to this steep, wind-swept stretch of Crete's southern coast: bare hillsides dropping straight to the sea, shaped the proposal for two eco-houses stepped into the slope.

The architecture is semi-modular, suited to a site remote enough that construction methods had to be kept simple and repeatable. A single form recurs down the hillside: the frame of a cube, rather than the solid itself, its corners detailed with the precision of a piece of furniture; as if each volume were a drawer pulled halfway out of the cliff face, in the same tone as the surrounding rock. Pergolas, some draped in loose fabric, extend the living spaces outward into the landscape, offering shade against the exposed site while keeping the architecture low and half-buried, insulated from wind and sun alike.
